As a Humanitarian Affairs intern in the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), I was part of the team producing the 2022 Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO), launched on the 2nd of December 2021.
Working on this project has been one of the most rewarding and insightful experiences of my professional career. This online report offers a thorough explanation of people’s needs in protracted crises and conflicting areas, analysis of the current and future trends in humanitarian action alongside inspiring human stories and through-provoking photographs.
The journey towards the GHO’s launch has been intense and challenging, and entailed the management of information from UN country teams and agencies deployed in at least 31 countries. I was involved in data visualization development, selection of the audiovisual and stories, and proofreading text. I drafted a piece about the consequences of underfunding in dire humanitarian situations such as Haiti, Yemen and Iraq.
All this has built my skills, but the main thing I learned during this process is the importance of raising awareness on how humanitarian aid saves lives. I hope, with this report, we have contributed to this goal. From a personal perspective, it would be impossible to have done such a project without amazing teamwork. And I was lucky enough to be surrounded by incredible professionals who call themselves the «dream team» (and deserve the name!).
I would like to invite you to explore the different sections and pages of this report, to get a snapshot of how people around the world are confronting arduous needs and scenarios, from famine to endless displacement and a violent environment, while also taking inspiration on how to overcome the obstacles and improve the way we deliver aid.
