El padre del internet en Camboya

🇪🇸 Norbert Klein es conocido como «el padre del internet» en Camboya. 💻 Igual que España tiene el dominio ‘.es’ o Francia ‘.fr’, él consiguió para este pequeño país del sudeste asiático el ‘.kh’ (de khmer, la lengua camboyana). 😎

Nobert llegó a Camboya en los años 90 para ayudar en el Ministerio de Agricultura camboyano. 🌾🌿 El país había quedado devastado después de una guerra civil de más de 30 años y necesitaba mucho apoyo extranjero. A él le pidieron que estableciese las comunicaciones con los ministerios de agricultura de otros países como Vietnam o Australia. 🌏

Entonces, se dio cuenta de que sólo podría hacerlo si tenían una dirección de correo electrónico y que, para ello, Camboya tenía que tener su propio dominio.📬 Así con mucho esfuerzo, aprendiendo gracias a un disquete que le enviaron desde la Universidad de Columbia, en 1994 consiguió situar a Camboya en el mapa virtual con el ‘.kh’. 🔝

Si le preguntas a Norbert de dónde es, probablemente te responda que es alemán, para ahorrar tiempo. 👀 Pero este autodidacta nació en la Antigua Yugoslavia, recibió la nacionalidad alemana después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y hace un año, cuando se acercó a renovar su pasaporte a la embajada en Phnom Penh,  le dijeron que su lugar de nacimiento era Serbia. 😮

A él realmente no le importa mucho. Vive en el retiro, en una pequeña granja  de pimienta en la provincia de Kep (especie muy famosa en esta zona) con su mujer camboyana Sothy. 🌱

Se puede visitar para conocer el proceso de producción de la pimienta y para degustarla, pero no vayas si esperas coger wifi, no encontrarás señal alguna.❎

He arrived to Cambodia in the 90’s to help the Ministry of Agriculture. 🌾🌿The country was devasted after a civil war of 30 years and it needed a lot of foreign support. He was told to set communications with the ministries of agriculture of other countries as Vietnam and Australia.🌏

So, he realized that they were just going to be able to do that if they had an email address, and for that they needed their own domain.📬 With a lot of effort, learning through a diskette sent by the University of Colombia, in 1994 he managed to place Cambodia in the virtual map with the «.kh». 🔝

If you ask Norbert where is he from, he will probably answer that he is German just to save time. 👀 But this self-taught was born in the Former Yugoslavia. He revieved the German nationality after the World War II, and one year ago when he went to the embassy in Phnom Penh to renew his passport, they told him that his place of birth was Serbia.😮

He didn’t really care about it. He lives in the retirement, in a small pepper farm in the province of Kep (a famous specie from this zone) with his cambodian wife Sothy. 🌱

You can visit it to find out the production process of the pepper and also, to taste it. But, don’t wait to get wifi, you won’t find any signal over there. ❎
